Hope for the Abandoned
Thirst Creative
In Haiti children with mental or physical disabilities are generally shunned and many are abandoned. Voodoo says to get rid of the child while many people believe they are evil and that the child is punishment on your family. But God says something else. He sees beauty in their brokenness.
Being a pastor in Haiti is a dangerous profession. When a pastor is seen with Americans, he or she can be targeted by would-be criminals because it is assumed that the Americans have given the pastor money. After Pastor Dare had been with Americans, he was followed and someone broke into his home. He tried to tell the robber that he didn't have money. He apparently didn't like that answer and shot Pastor Dare in the neck. Miraculously, the bullet went straight through without rupturing any major veins and missed his spine. God had spared him!
Pastor Dare and his wife have a love and passion for helping children at risk. His wife was a nurse at a hospital in Port-au-Prince. As Haitians continued to abandon disabled children at the hospital, Pastor Dare's wife knew she needed to do something so she started bringing the children home and eventually quit nursing to care for them. Today the Dares are caring for 28 disabled children.
Kicked Out
A few weeks ago all of these children were evicted from their home because the landlord does not like "ugly" children in his home.
Don Shire Ministries is currently searching for a new home. We have found two, but both have fallen through. If anyone has a connection in Haiti and has a home, please let us know. You can contact us at steve@javarelief.org.
There is great opportunities to help in this situation:
- Many of the children have seizures regularly and need medication. It costs $300 a month. Without this medication, the children have seizures and sometimes end up needing to be hospitalized.
- Once a new house is found, it will need to be painted, repaired and cleaned.
- The ministry needs $3,000 to finish the process of officially licensing the home.
- The children lay/sleep on the concrete floor. Gymnastic mats, beds or cots are needed.
Java Relief is making this a priority. Any profits or donations we bring in during the next month will go directly to help create this home for the children. Thank you in advance for your help!
